Note that this is a phonics "readiness" book, and does not really teach phonics/letter sounds. It is a letter recognition book. If your child is fairly comfortable with letter recognition and you want to start teaching letter sounds, I recommend skipping this book and going for the Spectrum K Phonics book. Or better yet, if your child is ready to write letters freehand, I found PLAID PHONICS 2011 STUDENT EDITION LEVEL K to be even better.In this "phonics readiness" book, the first 44 pages asks the child to circle a particular letter in a word. The rest of the book asks the child to find words that start or end with a particular sound, but it spells out all of the words. Therefore the child need only to find the written words that start (or end) with the given letter, not try to figure out its sound.The book also uses the soft sound of consonants such as "city" and "cent" for "c" as well as long vowel sounds. These are not normally taught until the child has hard letter sounds down, which is usually Kindergarten or even 1st grade.This book didn't work for us but if you have a 3 or 4 year old just learning to recognize letters and you want a little practice with that it might work for you.

Jeanne Ballantine received her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1971. She is coauthor of OUR SOCIAL WORLD (Sage/Pine Forge, 2nd ed., 2009), THE SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 6th ed., 2009), SCHOOLS AND SOCIETY (Sage/Pine Forge 3rd ed. 2008) and many other books, articles, and papers. She is currently a university professor (Emerita) in the Sociology Department at Wright State University in Ohio.

Joan Z. Spade is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the State University of New York College at Brockport. She received her Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo and her B.A. from State University of New York at Geneseo. In addition to gender, Joan teaches courses on education, family, research methods, and statistics. She has published articles on gender, including rape and orientations toward paid work, as well as education. She also has co-edited two books in education. Joan is active in Sociologists for Women in Society, the Eastern Sociological Society, and the American Sociological Association.

About the Author

Bill Beswick is a leader in the field of applied sport psychology, internationally renowned for his work with elite soccer players and teams. After earning a master’s degree he worked as head coach of England’s gold-medal-winning basketball team at the Commonwealth Games. Beswick became the first full-time performance psychologist in English professional soccer.

Beswick has worked at Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Sunderland in the English Premier League and FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie. He has been a contributor to UEFA Pro Licence award courses for European football associations. He has international experience with the England U18 and U21 squads and as team psychologist with the English senior men’s national team. He is currently a consulting performance psychologist with Derby County FC in the English Championship Division, the English men’s rugby team and the British Olympic swimming team, along with advising athletic programs in the United States, including the one at Clemson University. 

Beswick’s book Focused for Soccer (Human Kinetics, 2001) is now in its second edition and is regarded as one of the best guides ever on psychology of performance in the sport.
